It’s a What? It’s a Kamado!

It’s a What? It’s a Kamado!

It’s been around for thousands of years. It can roast, bake, grill – and it’s a smoker too! It even makes a great pizza! What is it? It’s a Kamado!

The earliest “kamados” were simple clay vessels with lids. Archaeologists have found evidence of their use in food preparation worldwide for thousands of years. The tandoor, popular in Indian cuisine, is one example still in use today.

What Was Old is New Again

Specifically designed for outdoor grilling, today’s kamado grill is usually made of an extremely hard ceramic. It can be freestanding (on wheels) or can be built-in as part of an outdoor kitchen.

Fueled by lump charcoal and temperature controlled by a draft opening in the bottom paired with an adjustable vent on the top, it keeps a reliable, constant temperature. The versatile kamado can do anything your indoor oven can do – and more! (Your indoor oven may smoke, but that doesn’t make it a smoker!)

What Are My Choices?

Kamado grills are sold under brand names such as Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe and Primo, and are available in small, medium, large and x-large sizes. Colors include black, red and green.

Many people include both a gas or charcoal grill and a kamado grill in their outdoor kitchen.

At a recent party the host had two grills going. The kamado was cooking a pizza, the gas grill was searing steaks.
